Even through Mammoth Lakes is very small, we have some great shopping in our remote mountain town. Predictably, there are several great outdoor gear shops in town including The Largest Snowboard Shop in the World, Wave Rave, and one of the best Ski Shops around, Footloose Sports. We also really like Mammoth Mountaineering for all your backcountry needs and Kittredge Sports for all you alpine gear needs. All of these places are great if you are looking for major outdoor brands like Volcom, The North Face, Patagonia, Burton Snowboards, Atomic Skis, Black Diamond, or Salomon. However, this post focuses on the stores that offer a more unique shopping experience.
The Cactus and The Hawk - 3399 Main St, Suite M (see main photo)
The Cactus and The Hawk is probably the coolest shop in Mammoth Lakes offering an eclectic selection of brands and products that are more likely to be found in Los Angeles or New York than in the Eastern Sierra. Some of the brands they carry include Free City, Mother Denim, Pendleton, Gramicci, Snow Peak, Goldwin, and others. Don't be shocked at the price tags on some of the items in their store; they carry only top tier quality items that blend classic mountain style with the latest super trendy fashion. They also carry some housewares like mugs and bowls. The last time I was in their shop they even had an e-bike with a side car designed for your dog. There is no place more unique withing 300 miles of this store, it offers LA style with a Sierra twist and it is worth a visit anytime you are in town.
Ridge Merino - 4 Alpine Circle
Ridge is a local apparel brand selling their own line of products online and in a stand alone shop just off main street. They specialize in base layers, tees, hoodies, ladies leggings, sweat pants, and underwear made from....you guessed it....merino wool. Merino is probably the best material for technical performance apparel, however, it can be pricey. Somehow, Ridge Merino has figured out how to sell their apparel at a relatively affordable price. Most items range from $50-$200. They have a pretty extensive apparel line offered in classic colors like black and grey with some items available in a range of seasonal colors. If you are looking for that classic mountain style with the ultimate in performance, Ridge Merino is a great place to shop.
Located only a block or so away from the Largest Snowboard Shop in the World is Green Room. Don't mistake this place for a weed shop, it is one of our favorite places to shop for stylish mountain wear and hardgoods. They differ from Wave Rave in that the shop is smaller, they also sell freestyle skis, and they carry some pretty rad brands too. We like to shop here for Airblaster, Armada, Flylow, Line, and many others. The store is merchandised well, the vibe is super chill, and everyone who works there is helpful. They clearly are doing something right if they can stay in business while competing with one of the most well known snowboard shops in the world right down the street. Stop by next time you are in town, you will not be disappointed.
